Periodontal Disease Can Result in a Brain Abscess

Posted .

Did you know the periodontal disease can negatively affect your health in many ways beyond your oral health? Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an oral health condition that often results due to poor oral hygiene.  If left unchecked, periodontal disease will destroy your gum tissue and eventually cause tooth loss. However, there are even worse conditions that can arise from the disease, including brain abscesses.

Periodontal disease is a progressive disease, meaning that it will advance over time. In its early stages, it exists as what is known as gingivitis. Minor side effects and symptoms may be present at this time, including continuously red or swollen gums, and frequent bleeding from your mouth. If you notice the spotting of blood on your brush or dental floss when cleaning your mouth, you may be suffering from periodontal disease. As the disease progresses, the symptoms may become progressively worse.

In order to effectively treat periodontal disease, protecting your mouth against bacteria is essential. If an infection does occur, it is important to have it treated immediately. To ensure your oral health care is running smoothly, be sure to book bi-annual professional cleanings with your Dr. John Tortora as well as regular checkups.
