European Union Commission Proposes Comprehensive Measures to Phase Out Dental Amalgam Use

Initially, the European Union (EU) had set a target to phase out the utilization of dental amalgam by the year 2028. However, their recent “Proposal for Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council” aims to discontinue the use of dental amalgam as early as January 1, 2025. This proposal also includes a complete prohibition on the production and export of dental amalgam, which will take effect on the same date.

The EU’s primary objective is to reduce and ultimately eliminate the presence of mercury, a hazardous substance, from workplaces, water sources, and landfills. As part of this effort, dental practices will be required to adopt alternative dental products that are both environmentally friendly and safe for patients.
